ZŠ Jugoslávská is located in Ostrava-Zábřeh, where it provides education to pupils from 1st to 9th grade. Its teaching is based on the School Educational Programme “Learning with a Smile”. In addition to standard subjects, it offers a wide range of extracurricular activities that enable children to develop their talents and interests.

The school management emphasises modern teaching methods. To keep up with current trends, teachers have been involved in the training focused on AI tools for teaching, which is provided by the Moravian-Silesian Innovation Centre Ostrava, a.s. within the EDIH Ostrava project.

How does it work?

An EDIH Ostrava representative typically meets with a representative of the organisation interested in tailor-made training courses. Then, they identify specific needs and agree on a training topic together. This may focus on topics such as AI, cyber security, and digitalisation.

So far, training has been provided mainly to schools, with a focus on the use of AI. The purpose of particular training sessions is to introduce interested schools, organisations, and companies to the benefits of AI. In the case of teachers, these are mainly tools that will help them make their teaching more effective – for example, when creating educational materials. They will also take away valuable recommendations to help them prepare for lessons and save time. In addition, they will get the opportunity to share their experience of teaching different subjects online with the other participants.

The training sessions are scheduled for one day, lasting three or six hours, always led by an expert whose experience is most relevant to the session’s focus. As a matter of course, a discussion of specific questions from each participant’s practice is included. This interaction helps ensure that the training is as relevant as possible to their needs and that they learn the exact set of skills they will use in their profession.

At ZŠ Jugoslávská, the training was led by secondary school teacher Tomáš Gröpl. He also works as an IT business consultant and has long been involved in connecting modern technologies with artificial intelligence and education. For his approach and engaging explanations, he has gained popularity among teachers.

“I would like to express my gratitude for the training on using AI in teaching. The lecturer – Tomáš Gröpl – was perfect at delivering an engaging lecture that captivated everyone. Honestly, before the training, I was partly worried about how our teachers would find this topic interesting. Still, your lecturer won everyone over with his insight, speaking skills, presentation, and communication with us… I can’t truly recall a recent staff training session that would be so captivating as this one,” evaluated the training session Mgr. Petr Opletal, Principal of ZŠ Jugoslávská.
